Bartow Fifth Graders’ Performance on State ELA Milestone Assessment
BARTOW– Girls and economically advantaged students tend to be the groups that perform the best in 5th grade English Language Arts, according to state government data.
SUBGROUP #1
In most of the elementary schools in Bartow County, the percentage of 5th girls performing at the proficient or above level for ELA was higher compared to the boys. Out of all 12 schools in Bartow, White Elementary had the highest percentage of 5th grade girls (68.3%) score at this level.
SUBGROUP #2
The data by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) showed another trend: the percentage of students who are not economically disadvantaged and score at the proficient achievement level is higher than those that are economically disadvantaged.
These trends involve both gender and economic status demographics; however, these factors alone do not necessarily dictate how students will score on these end-of-grade tests.
INITIATIVE
The Bartow County School System started the Read to Grow program to provide additional reading practice and support to elementary students.
“Reading proficiency in these early school years is one of the most important predictors of high school graduation,” according to a 2021 news release by the Cartersville Chamber of Commerce.
That is why the Read to Grow program is always seeking people to partner with students at several elementary schools to improve their reading skills.
